Colour Sensors

The TCS3414 digital colour sensor is designed to accurately derive the colour chromaticity and illuminance (intensity) of ambient light, providing a digital output with 16-bit resolution.

The TCS3414 EVM helps facilitate evaluation of the TCS3414 colour sensor. The system comprises a sensor control board and a USB PICkit serial analyser (PKS) which interfaces to the EVM and also to a PC’s USB port using the cable provided. The TCS3414 sensor combines 12 photodiodes with red, green and blue filters (4 each) with 4 broadband photodiodes on a single IC. The combination enables the device to measure the colour content of a light source with 16 bit resolution without the use of expensive colour filters. 4 integrating ADCs simultaneously convert the photodiode currents to an I2C digital output representing the irradiance measured on each channel. This data can be interrogated by a microprocessor and the colour content measurements can be analysed.

Access to the EVM will enable you to assess whether the TCS3414 will suit your application. To use the TCS3414 EVM you will need a notebook or desktop PC running Windows XP or Vista . The host connection is via USBv1.1 or higher, using type-A connector, and the EVM connection uses mini type-B connector. Two installation CD-ROMs contain the PICkit software application and TCS3414 software application plus full documentation. Standard Microsoft USB class drivers are used.

TAOS integrated colour LTV sensors combine photodiode, color filter, and transimpedance amplifier - saving board space and reducing assembly cost over a discrete photodiode approach, and improving noise immunity. The sensors are ideal for applications such as colorimetry, printing process control, display color correction, and selectively ambient light detection or rejection.

TT Optek offers the OPB780 reflective colour sensor assembly. A programmable light-to-frequency converter combines 64 configurable Silicon photodiodes and a current-to-frequency converter on a single monolithic CMOS IC ideal for miniature applications.
