The PerkinElmer Blue Chip® Detonator is a general purpose robust detonator suitable to meet a wide range of the most demanding military and aerospace requirements. The Blue Chip® Detonator is qualified for a number of weapon systems and is in full rate production for two programs, with several more programs in the early award stage. The Blue Chip® Detonator was qualified to be compatible with MIL-DTL-23659 requirements. Additional testing has been completed to demonstrate that the detonator functions without degradation in extreme temperatures (liquid nitrogen to 150 C), thermal shock (liquid nitrogen to boiling water), and shock environments (concrete wall penetration).
The Blue Chip® Detonator is a “chip slapper” or Exploding Foil Initiator (EFI) detonator packaged in a TO-5 transistor style assembly. The chip slapper consists of an exploding metal foil, covered by a polyimide flying plate, deposited on a ceramic “chip” substrate. The detonator contains HNS-IV explosive powder compacted into a stainless steel ring. The assembly is laser welded to ensure that the device is hermetic to a leak rate of 10-9 ATM-CC-SEC-1.
PerkinElmer Optoelectronics manufactures Blue Chip® Detonators in a variety of configurations including 2 pin detonators for surface mounting and 6 pin for socket insertion or soldering to flexible cable. There are standard and low energy versions, as well as standard and high energy output designs.
Because the Blue Chip® Detonator meets the requirements of MIL-STD-1316 and MIL-DTL 23659 it has been approved for in line use by both the Army Fuze Safety Review Board and the Navy Weapon System Explosives Safety Review Board.
